In Freediving Hunter, we are to walk the steps, or swim them rather, of a new spearhunter facing his underwater adventures. The premise couldn’t be easier to understand: the more fish you successfully catch, the more you can advance in your venture.
This game was inspired by the developer own spearfishing hunting experience in Cuba, so you will find it very realistic, down to the textures of your prey.
And while we are on the subject of those prey, it’s important to note that the fish aren’t just swimming around you aimlessly; they are sorta smart and will react to your presence by changing their patterns and direction.
Furthermore, as if getting a fish on your spear wasn’t difficult enough to start with, you sometimes have to fight off some greedy shark, attracted by your yummy fish.
A good advice while playing this game is to avoid black outs: created by diving for too long and lacking oxygen, they really put a damper on your experience.
The user interface might be a bit intimidating with so many buttons, but they are very responsive and once you learn to use them properly, they will not be as scary.
Overall, I’d say this is certainly an interesting game if you want a real, different type of challenge.
I found the game to be a soothing experience, may be it’s the shades of blues, the water, the fish swimming in hypnotic fashion, or even the soundtrack to the game. It was like being physically transported to a warmer climate.
The only point I ended up disliking is that at the end of the day, no matter how much fish you caught or how extensively awesome your gear became, you are still gonna do the very same thing you did at the beginning, you are going to dive and shoot a fish. I can see that sometimes the enjoyment of a game isn’t an end goal in itself but rather the journey, but I personally enjoyed a bit more of a varied experience.
Don’t let that deter you from picking up this title, as it has a very affordable price and will keep you busy for hours.
Plus, it’s the cheapest way to escape the upcoming cold winter blues!
